Yes, poker has many different variations such as Texas Hold’em, 5 Card Draw, 7-Card Stud, Omaha and High/Low Chicago, and each of these games has their own set of rules.  Even though there are twists for all of these games, each of them have common terms that all poker players should be aware of such as raise, check, call, fold, blinds and ante.

Quite naturally there are more, but these are just a few of the more important ones to know before learning the different variations of poker games.

The average poker game involves the dealer passing out a certain number of cards to each player, and they are face down.  Each player has an opportunity to either raise, call or fold based upon the cards that he is holding.  There are different rounds of betting until the player with the best hand wins the pot based upon who gets the highest winning combination from above.

It is imperative that poker players pay attention to the patterns of their opponents if they want to be successful poker players.  This is one of the best strategies for winning the game.  Concentrate on what your opponent does when he gets a good, bad or indifferent hand.  Some people raise only when they have a good hand, but others do things to throw you off of their trail, so that they can win the pot.  This is called bluffing, and it is a very important strategy to use when playing poker.

All in all, poker is a fun game that can be played for both money and just plain fun.  It can become a very analytical game where players must know how to play according to the odds.  Based upon the cards in your hand, you will learn how to raise, call or fold.  Hopefully, you’ll learn how to win the pot more often than lose it.
